The HAL-5 Salute was instigated by the enlisted as an
Honorable way to say "Goodbye" to departing CO's. It was also used as
an appropriate way to send the Flight of HH1 Hueys home after all DET's. ACDUTRA
as well as Week-end Away OPs.
It became well known to the wives of the Squadron. so much so that a certain
Officers wife (name withheld to protect her modesty)
refused to leave the Squadron, after husband's Change of Command until receiving
the Salute.
Several Enlisted, (also nameless) were gathered and in Full Dress White
Uniform proceeded to the flight line and rendered a proper
HAL-5 Salute! How the hell did we get away with that?
